Equipment Expertise
What is a cooling tower?
A cooling tower rejects heat from a building’s cooling-water system to the outdoor air. It commonly supports chillers or water-loop heat-pump systems, with the tower type and connected equipment determining the operating arrangement.
Where you’ll find this equipment
- Commercial buildings with central cooling
- Water-loop heat-pump buildings
- Larger office and mixed-use properties
- Facilities with water-cooled mechanical equipment

System Operation
How It Works
Warm water passes through a heat-rejection section as fans move outdoor air through the tower. In an open tower, a small portion of the water evaporates to remove heat. Closed-circuit towers keep the process fluid inside a coil and reject heat through a separate spray-water circuit.
Equipment Overview
Main Components
Fans and drives
Move air through the heat-rejection section.
Fill or coil section
Provide the surface area needed to transfer heat.
Water distribution and basin
Distribute and collect tower water.
Level controls and eliminators
Manage water level and reduce water droplet carryover.
Common Problems We Find
- Fan vibration or worn drive components
- Poor water distribution
- Scale, debris or fouled heat-transfer surfaces
- Water-level or make-up valve faults
- Leaks and damaged tower components
- High condenser-water temperatures
Why Maintenance Matters
Mechanical inspections, cleaning coordination and seasonal checks help maintain heat-rejection performance. Tower care also needs an appropriate water-treatment and water-management program coordinated with the building’s responsible specialists.
- More consistent building operation
- Earlier identification of wear and deficiencies
- Clearer repair and replacement priorities
The RK Approach
Service that considers the whole building
RK Climate Control supports commercial equipment troubleshooting, preventative maintenance and replacement planning throughout the Lower Mainland. We focus on practical diagnostics, clear documentation and the way each piece of equipment works with the rest of the building.
Share the tower type, connected system and any high-temperature alarms, vibration, leaks or seasonal maintenance needs.
